These situations generally can't wait for a routine appointment and call for prompt attention from a dentist or, in severe cases like difficulty breathing or swallowing, an emergency room.

What counts as a dental emergency?

Here's when

A dental emergency is any oral or facial problem that needs immediate treatment because delay could cost you a tooth, cause intense pain, or let a dangerous infection spread. Key examples:

Knocked-out tooth — act fast; best chance of saving it is within 30–60 minutes
Severe, unrelenting toothache — especially with swelling
Dental abscess — a pus-filled infection that can spread
Cracked or broken tooth — particularly with pain or exposed nerve
Uncontrolled bleeding — won't stop after injury or extraction
Significant swelling — of the face, gums, or jaw

Rule of thumb: serious pain, bleeding that won't stop, or noticeable swelling means get to a dentist fast. If swelling makes it hard to breathe or swallow, go straight to the ER — that's life-threatening.

Common dental emergencies include severe tooth pain, a knocked-out tooth, a cracked or broken tooth, a lost filling or crown, swelling or abscesses, and bleeding that won't stop. If you're in serious pain or have suffered trauma to your mouth, it's best to seek care right away.
Contact your dentist as soon as possible to be seen quickly. In the meantime, you can manage pain with over-the-counter relief, rinse with warm salt water, and apply a cold compress for swelling. If a tooth is knocked out, keep it moist (in milk or saliva) and bring it with you, ideally within an hour.
As soon as possible, ideally the same day. Quick treatment can mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth, and it helps prevent infections from spreading or worsening. Many practices reserve time for same-day emergency appointments.

If you have a PPO dental plan, then you can choose to go to any dentist whether that dentist is in or out of your network. You might pay a little more if you choose to go to an out of network dentist, but it is your right to choose the dentist and the office that you feel best fits your needs.
