Teeth Grinding (Bruxism): When It’s Normal — and When It’s Not
By Dr. Cohen, DDS

If you’ve ever been told you grind your teeth at night, you’re not alone. Bruxism, or teeth grinding, is fairly common — especially in children. In younger kids, grinding is often temporary and usually something they outgrow as their jaw and teeth develop.
However, if you are a late teenager or an adult and grinding your teeth, this is not considered normal and should not be ignored.
Why Adult Teeth Grinding Is a Problem
When bruxism continues into adulthood, it can place excessive force on your teeth, jaw, and surrounding muscles. Over time, this can lead to a range of issues, including:
Frequent headaches, especially in the morning
Neck and jaw pain from constant muscle tension
Cracked or broken teeth, fillings, or crowns
Excessive wear and tear on teeth, making them shorter, flatter, and more sensitive
Many patients are surprised to learn they grind their teeth at night until they begin experiencing pain or notice damage during a dental exam.
Simple and Effective Treatment Options
The good news is that bruxism is very manageable, especially when addressed early.
One of the most effective treatments is a custom professional night guard made by your dentist. These guards are designed specifically for your bite, helping to protect your teeth while reducing strain on your jaw and muscles.
For patients looking for a more affordable short-term option, boil-and-bite night guards available over the counter can also work reasonably well. While they are not as precise or durable as a custom guard, they are often far better than doing nothing at all.
Why Addressing Bruxism Matters
Allowing teeth grinding to continue untreated can lead to permanent damage that becomes more complex — and more expensive — to fix over time. Cracked teeth, worn enamel, and chronic jaw pain are all preventable with early intervention.
If you suspect you grind your teeth, or if you’re waking up with headaches, jaw soreness, or tooth sensitivity, it’s important to have it evaluated.
At our office in Mission Viejo, serving South Orange County, we routinely assess signs of bruxism and help patients choose the right solution to protect their smile and long-term oral health.
Addressing teeth grinding early can save your teeth — and your comfort — for years to come.
